The National Eligibility Test (NET) will be restructured and the aspirants’ capabilities will be tested in a different format from next year. An exercise to elicit opinions of teachers and students across the country is currently on.

Conducted by the University Grants Commission (UGC), the NET has seen changes from June 2012 when the entire exam was made objective type. All the three papers are now conducted in the objective type mode unlike previously when the third paper was subjective.
“However, even the present format may see some changes after we complete the exercise of taking the views of teachers and students across the country,” said UGC member D.N. Reddy.

He is a part of the two-member UGC Committee constituted to review NET in its entirety while the other being Yogendra Yadav from Centre for the Study of Developing Societies.

Prof. Reddy reminds that since NET has gained importance with its qualification made mandatory for recruitment of teaching posts in the country, there is a need to bring in dynamic changes. Even the Balachandra Mungekar Committee in its report in 2005 had suggested making NET more dynamic by restructuring the papers.

Prof. Reddy explains that some academics felt that the four-and-a-half hours exam time was too taxing. There are also questions as to why two papers (second and third) are conducted for the candidates’ chosen subject. Plus, there is also this argument that the subject knowledge could be tested in a single paper.

Demand for outsourcing the conduct of exam on the lines of GRE and CAT too has been raised. “All such issues would be discussed at the regional level meetings being conducted across the country,” he said.

“The two-member committee has co-opted 10 other professors to elicit views of stakeholders. One such meeting would be held at the Osmania University on August 17. The report is likely to be submitted in two months and the recommendations would be implemented from June 2014 exam,” Prof. Reddy said.

Till December 2011, candidates had to take three papers of which two were objective type with the third paper being descriptive. With lakhs of candidates appearing every year, the descriptive paper had become an impediment in early declaration of results.

To expedite the results, even the third paper was made objective from June 2012.
